Riggers earn three of possible four points in Weekend Action
Leduc slowly creeping up East Division standings in CJHL
Was it the comeback that will get the ball rolling for the Leduc Schwab Riggers?
Only time will tell. But the weekend results are certainly encouraging.
Down two goals after two periods this past Sunday at Bill Hunter Arena in Edmonton, Leduc battled back to score three unanswered third-period goals to beat the Edmonton Mustangs 5-4.
Spencer Jewell scored twice in that third period flurry, including the winning goal with just 24 seconds remaining. Brandon Powlik also scored for the Riggers in the third, while Scott Hanson finished with a goal and an assist.
The win allowed the Riggers, who fell 5-4 in overtime to Strathcona Friday on home ice, to pick up three of a possible four points in Capital Junior Hockey League (CJHL) weekend play.
Leduc is now 2-8-0-3, good for seven points. While the Riggers are still last in the East Division, they have now surpassed a pair of West Division teams, and are only two points behind Fort Saskatchewan for the sixth and final playoff spot in the East Division.
The Riggers host the still-winless Stony Plain Flyers Friday, Nov. 4 at 7:45 p.m. at the Leduc Recreation Centre.
Icemen Split Weekend Games
The weekend got off to a roaring start for the Icemen.
Steven Walker scored three goals to lead Wetaskiwin to a 7-2 victory over the Beverly Warriors Friday night at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre. Walker, known more for his stay-at-home defensive play as opposed to his offensive skills, also added one assist for a four-point night.
Travis Gano scored twice and added one assist.
Wetaskiwin scored four times while enjoying a man advantage and added one goal while shorthanded. But the Icemen were not able to get the weekend sweep.
A four goal first period led the visiting Morinville Jets to a 7-4 victory over the Icemen Sunday at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.
The Jets scored three goals on their first seven shots, forcing goaltender Quinton Bell out of the game. His replacement, Garret Montour, had a steady hand until the third period.
The Icemen battled back with three second period goals to make it a close game, but Morinville, in first place in the West Division, answered with three third period tally's to take the two points.
Travis Gano, scored his tenth goal of the season for the Icemen, who fall to 8-5 on the season, good for third place in the CJHL's East Division.
The Icemen visit Fort Saskatchewan Friday and the Edmonton Royals Sunday.
Wetaskiwin's next home game is Friday, Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. vs. Strathcona.
Chiefs Stay At .500
In another thrilling finish, Rylan Taylor scored his second goal of the night, and sixth of the season with just 1:32 left on the clock Friday in Beaumont, giving the hometown Chiefs a 5-4 victory over the Spruce Grove Regals. Nolan Tracey finished the night with four assists, Joel Tessier had two goals and an assist, Justin Wood had a goal and two assists and Sean Harms earned three assists.
It was Beaumont’s lone game last weekend. The defending league champion Chiefs sit with six wins and six losses on the season.
