Icemen Knock-off Best Team in CJHL

Riggers on roll, win second straight over the weekend

It’s been a productive week for the three Capital Junior Hockey League (CJHL) teams based in the Pipestone Flyer area.The Leduc Schwab Riggers, after going winless in their first eight games, have assembled a modest two-game winning streak, the Beaumont Chiefs, defending league champions, won their lone weekend game, and the Wetaskiwin Icemen, one of the surprise teams early in the season, knocked the Edmonton Royals from their lofty perch atop the CJHL.

The Riggers, after beating the Edmonton Mustangs 5-4 back on Oct. 30, won their only game this past weekend, doubling up Stony Plain 6-3.

The fact the Flyers have yet to win made little difference to a Leduc squad that is quickly showing it has the potential to challenge for a playoff spot in the CJHL’s East Division. “Anytime you can get two points, it’s a positive, but as a team I think some guys still have a lot more to give on the defensive side of the puck. We will work on that this week at practice in preparation for our game on Friday,” said Riggers head coach Dean Gauvreau. “As for back to back wins, it’s very encouraging for our team to achieve this for their confidence going forward. I think our team is heading in the right direction but there still is a lot of work to be done and it’s going to be a very interesting next couple of months to see how things shape up.” The Riggers are now 3-8-0-3 on the season, and will host the Edmonton Mustangs Friday at 7:45 p.m. at the Leduc Recreation Centre.

The Icemen split their weekend games to stay in third place in the East Division. Despite a four-goal effort from Travis Gano, Wetaskiwin gave up four-straight power play goals Friday in Fort Saskatchewan, losing 7-6 to the Hawks. Gano’s 14 goals on the season leave him second in the league. The Icemen got back on track Sunday, recording what is by far their most-important victory of the season. After losing 5-4 to the Edmonton Royals two weeks ago, the Icemen traveled to Edmonton and knocked off the Royals 7-4.

Edmonton, which had just one loss in 14 games coming into Sunday's action, fell to 13-2 on the season, good for second place in the East Division with 26 points. Sherwood Park overtook the Royals for first place with Edmonton's loss. The Knights are 13-1-0-1, good for 27 points.

Wetaskiwin, now 9-6, will host a pair of games at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre during the Remembrance Day Long weekend. The Icemen will take on Strathcona Friday, Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m., and will face Sherwood Park Sunday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m.

Beaumont won its lone game last weekend, getting a pair of goals from Alex Belzevick in a 4-1 victory over the Strathcona Bruins. The Chiefs are now 7-6 on the year, good for fifth place in the East Division. Beaumont will host St. Albert Friday at 8:30 p.m.
