Wrestlers Betting on Successful Fundraiser

There are many ways for sports teams to raise money. And let’s face it, all teams, from hockey, to football … to wrestling, are required to go into their community and bring in the funds needed to pay for travel, uniforms, equipment and much more.

That in mind, the Wetaskiwin Composite High School Sabres wrestling program will put its ingenuity to the test Friday, Nov. 18.

The Sabres will host Wetaskiwin wrestling’s first ever Court Whist Tourney & Silent Auction at the Memorial Arts Centre.

The Sabres plan to offer patrons an interesting night of cards using a modified score card, with both the high and low points of the night earning cash prizes. Players rotate partners throughout the evening and have the opportunity to socialize and bid on the accompanying silent auction items.

“There will be a full meal concession and cash bar, and hopefully we have a recipe for financial success,” says Cari McDonnell, parent of a Sabres wrestler, and avid photographer who supplies local media with tournament photos. “If all goes well, we will have about 100 guests seated at the card tables and raise more than $3000!

“While the parents and coaches are organizing the activities, the athletes will be volunteering alongside us to ensure we have enough hands available for a smooth and fun evening. This year in particular, we are working hard to raise enough funds to carry our team of 20-plus members throughout the season.”

McDonnell and her committee have sold more than half of those seats. Tickets are only $20 per player. The committee will accept all donations suitable for a silent auction.

McDonnell will also be selling tickets at the Wetaskiwin Farmer’s Market Wednesday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“As our program continues to grow, competition provides fundamental experience to athlete development and advancement in the sport. Wetaskiwin wrestlers have represented our community provincially and nationally,” added McDonnell. “From winning provincial team banners the last season to most recently bringing home medals from the Western Canada Games this past August, the team hopes to build on its successes and continue to excel in the upcoming season.”

As for takes place on the wrestling mat, the Sabres will host hundreds of wrestlers in the 25th Anniversary of the Wetaskiwin Classic wrestling tournament Dec. 2 and 3.

WCHS will also host the trials for the Zone 4 wrestling team for the upcoming Alberta Winter Games in February, 2012.
