Rotary Invests in Community
“Service Above Self” is the slogan on the press release announcing the planned investment in the community by the Wetaskiwin Rotary Club. The Wetaskiwin Rotary is to be commended for living up to the claim as Christmas came early for three deserving and grateful community causes. Accepting funding on November 15, 2011 from the Rotarians were the Wetaskiwin Health Foundation, the Wetaskiwin Library and the Boys and Girls Club.
Donna Andres, Vice Chair of the Wetaskiwin Health Foundation accepted a cheque for $500 from Rotary President Justin Wieclaw. The funds will be designated to the Seniors Health & Wellness 2011/12 Campaign. The Foundation plays a very important role with helping to provide top notch healthcare services for the benefit of all in Wetaskiwin.
Executive Director, Boys and Girls Club, Dana Badke was present at the Rotary noon hour luncheon to accept a cheque for $2000. This money will be combined with other Boys and Girls Club funds to commence the building retrofit for a fire alarm system and building upgrades that adhere to the Alberta Fire and Building Code Standard. The Wetaskiwin Boys and Girls Club is very pleased with the generous donation from the Rotary Club. Ms. Sherri Senger, President of the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club stated earlier, “The Boys and Girls Club is dedicated to the welfare and safety of our children”.
When Ms. Marilyn Keller, President of the Wetaskiwin Library Board accepted the cheque from Rotary District 5370 representative John Stoddard, she explained that the library will purchase 10 Kobo e-reading devices that will be loaded with pre-selected titles for Seniors. She described the importance of the e-reading devices to our aging population. “The e-readers will be able to download books and have them in large print which is easier for some seniors to read. Our target is to have 10 e-readers for now.” The books will be downloaded with westerns, mystery and romance books.
Ms. Keller didn’t require ‘a download of enlarged print’ to see the printing on a cheque showing a sum of $3,000.00 made out to the Wetaskiwin Library’s Seniors Kobo E-Readers project. The Rotary Club of Wetaskiwin received a matching grant from Rotary District 5370 to provide the total contribution.
The stated purpose of Rotary is to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Their investment in the community of Wetaskiwin is a great example of fulfilling that purpose.
Rotary provides financial assistance to projects in Wetaskiwin to the tune of about $40,000 per year. President Wieclaw believes the Rotary Club of Wetaskiwin is one of the service groups that fulfills this purpose and concludes by saying, “it (Rotary) is needed and necessary to keep some of the projects and organizations alive and moving in Wetaskiwin.”
