Millet Museum to host “Doors Open”

On July 14th, the Millet Museum will be opening its doors to the public, offering a guided behind the scenes tour, showcasing day to day activities, such as collection donations, permanent numbering of collection items and exhibit preparation. The museum will also be hosting guided walking tours of Millets cemeteries, churches and historic buildings, including St. Norbert’s Catholic Church and the Millet United Church, as well as the Millet Fire Hall, all open to the public from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm.   Please check at the Museum to confirm the building that will be open.

The current Millet Fire Hall was built in 2000, after being located in a garage on Alex Kerr’s town property for several years.  The building now accommodates Fire Brigade Activities, and stores the first pumper purchased in 1979, the midship pumper purchased in May 2001, Tanker #2 that was bought in 1980, the rapid response pumper that was bought in 1995 and Tanker #5 that was bought in 2001. 

The Millet United Church was built in 1902 as the Methodist Church, however in 1925 the Canadian Methodists and the Presbyterian Churches joined and became known as the United Church of Canada. This church displays typical prairie architecture. In 1948 the church was remodeled: the tall steeple was removed and a front entrance was added, and later in the 1980's a hall and kitchen were added onto the back, and the front entrance was moved from the South to the East side of the building.

After it was built in 1907 by William Kovar at a cost of $1550, St. Norbert’s Catholic Church (below) was blessed by Bishop Legal. Initially this church displayed typical prairie "Church" architecture however changes over the years have caused it to become much more sophisticated. The roof consists of two levels, the steeple is octagonal in shape, and the cross is very predominant. There are other decorative features such as the gothic arches over the windows and the cross with three arches over it on the side. The traditional placement of the altar is in the east end of the church, however it in this church it is on the south end. 

Both the Millet United Church and the St. Norbert’s Catholic Church properties are presently up for sale.  This may be the last time you would be able to see the inside of the church as these over 100 year church icons.

The museum will also be offering a “Family Fun Saturday” program that afternoon from 1:00 until 3:00, with a “Year of the Dragon” theme. Please stop by or call the Museum at 780-387-5558 for more information.
