Wetaskiwin Retains Crown

The 44th Annual Alberta Schools Athletic Association’s (ASAA) Provincial Championships was held in Red Deer on Saturday, Oct 20th. The event was hosted by Hunting Hills High School of Red Deer at the Riverbend Golf Course/Recreation Area. The day began overcast and snowy, but by race time the snow had stopped but it was crisp, cool, and breezy. A total of 735 runners from all over the province competed in the one-day event.
At the meet the Wetaskiwin Composite Sabres defended its 3A X-Country Championship title for the 12th straight year! The ASAA’s championships have six divisions, three for girls and three for boys. Students are grouped by age and run in Junior, Intermediate, and senior events. The girls run either 3,000 or 4,000 meters while the boys run 4,000, 5,000 or 6,000 meters.
The Wetaskiwin Sabers had 21 runners entered in the various divisions. Since the 21st Century started in 2001 Wetaskiwin has won the 3A Classification. This year’s team was composite of seven girls and fourteen boys.
Maddison Oxton and Mikayla Barkwell ran the 3,000M Junior Girls event with Maddison placing 17th out of 125 runners.
In the 4000M Intermediate Girls Natasha Smallwood placed 22nd, and Hannah Ballhorn 54th out of a field of 130 participants. In the 4000m senior division Emily Maplethrope finished 16th out of 111 contestants, while Christine Smith edged out Robyn Hebert as they placed 37th and 38th.
In the junior boys 129 runners were entered in the 4000M run. Addison Campbell, Bradley Brooks, Nakai McDonnell, Alex Toohey, and Jon Riston represented the Sabers.
In the Intermediate boys the distance was 5000M. Berin Brand, Colton McDonnell, Brendan O’Callaghan, Ricky Luebke, Ben Anderson, and Trent Hebert ran for Wetaskiwin in the field of 115 runners.
125 runners competed in the 6000M senior boys division. Wetaskiwin’s seniors did extremely well Alex Andres and Tyler Smith placing in the top ten and Raymond Risto 42nd. The senior boys secured the first place finish for Wetaskiwin.
Other local schools and students represented at the ASAA Championship were Sierra Halwa, Tmurlane Cakmak, Mykel Ruptash, Stephen Raitz, and Christine Simard from Leduc Comp, Zach Steele and Justin Prenioslo from Warburg, and Lee & Rae Metrunec, Janelle Thiessen, and Kelly Harke from New Sarepta.
