Alberta At Work Job Fair
North Leduc, AB – Hailed as a “Nisku Job Fair”, this annual event actually took place in North Leduc at the Executive Royal Inn. Planned and hosted by New Cap Radio and its event partners, this job fair was introduced 36 employers –participating companies- and a prize sponsor, the River Cree Resort and Casino, which offered a draw for a valuable stay at their impressive destination in West Edmonton.
Worley Parsons Cord led the way, advertising that they are hiring for a number of positions in Construction: managers, safety advisors, ironworkers and crane operators are just a few of the positions listed that need new hires.
New Cap owns several radio companies, including 96.3 Capital FM, K-97 Classic Rock, 790 CFCW, CAM-FM 98.1 and W-1440: through these stations, they successfully launched a campaign to dynamically promote the event, and the entire day saw crowds of hopeful applicants strolling through the banquet rooms cleverly set up at the Inn. Some of the promotional ads for this event thundered: “Do you want a better job?” capturing the hopes and dreams of many already working in Industrial positions.
The City of Edmonton, for example, is currently in a dynamic ‘hiring mode’: proudly announcing “Make an impact in one of Canada’s leading innovative cities!” it boasted a large exhibit manned by eight or so division managers and supervisors, ready to answer any question on their respective shops and various career opportunities. Canadian Industrial Paramedics were on site, recruiting and explaining their duties to an endless stream of visitors. Their staff “administers immunization, provide drug and alcohol firstline testing, perform sutures, and treat minor and major illnesses and injuries on industrial sites”.
Several well-known industrial entities were present, all vying for the attention and the resumes of job seekers: Aecon, Big Eagle Services, Caron Transport, Savannah Drilling, and Nisku’s GLM, Guardian and Makloc were some of the eager employers representing various industries, displaying brochures and goodies, equally eager to hire new people, dynamically promoting their message with articulate staff on hand. At the Makloc booth, a female drafting engineer spoke with a few visitors, and this writer, familiar with the company, watches with fascination how animated and helpful she was in answering questions…
NAIT was present: in 1962, it enrolled its first students, 29 communication electrician apprentices. A lot has changed there in the past 50 years, but not the core of its mandate: Relevant knowledge. Real skills. Rewarding careers. Visit nait.ca. That was the message shared! There were more partners from the Oil & Gas Industry: Nabors Drilling, Haliburton, NOV and the PTI Group are just a few more names that are familiar to people already in the industry, and impressive names for those ‘dreaming’ of entering a new industry.
Employers’ exhibits competed in color, design and friendly staff: one that displayed a large image of core pipe and greenery was that of CORIX, that promoted “Building a World of Sustainable Communities”.
One of Canada’s longest-running “home-grown success story” is Wajax, at 150 years old: through its three core companies, Wajax Equipment, Wajax Power Systems and Wajax Industrial components, it owns a network of 100 branches across Canada. The sheer size of this company makes it understandable that it would participate in many job fairs, every month of the year! A cheerful Ensign recruiter shared that she had participated in 3 job fairs that week, with two more the following week; it is obvious that the workplace in Alberta is alive and well, needing more bodies and more skilled workers and managers to thrive and grow!
In the well-designed and comprehensive “Alberta At Work” Job Fair program, these 36 companies described their activities, their expectations and the positions and training available to new team members. Congrats to New Cap Radio for assembling such a dynamic, interesting group of employers, and for gathering such a large crowd of job seekers!
