HUB Says “Welcome”

City of Leduc, AB – Nothing says “welcome!” better than a gathering of friends, some great food and a little background music. That was the intent of the Leduc Regional Hub, a central office in this city that provides residents with information and contacts for a variety of products and services, when they hosted a NEWCOMERS’ SOCIAL last Wednesday. Working closely with the Leduc City and County Family & Community Support Services (FCSS), Hub has recently moved into a permanent office, within the Leduc Legion on 50th Avenue. Many have expressed a positive opinion on this move, as the synergy between these two entities is obvious, and very timely!
Being held in the bright and spacious Leduc Legion Hall, its plentiful and delish appetizers prepared by the Legion’s fine kitchen team, the evening function saw several dozen guests happily gather and mingle, also getting acquainted with a handful of business operators. We feel inclined to highlight the welcoming efforts of these dynamic business entities: the Welcome Wagon (of course), Global Pets (thanks for the holistic treats, my cats love them!), Play’d Out Café, a new dynamic presence in the downtown core, the SERVUS bank (nice ladies!), the Lemings with their Great Canadian Dollar Store’s colorful display and Tammy Haayema of Kennelli Springs, a great community supporter.
The congenial host of the event was Susan Perry, the chair of HUB: at a table manned by cheerful and friendly HUB volunteers, a large collection of brochures greeted guests, who were offered a ticket for door prizes upon arrival. The brochures displayed covered a wide variety of topics, and a golden nugget of this collection was a little booklet titled “Community Resource Guide” that was compiled by Leduc County FCSs (Family & Community Support Services). This little book is a precious collection of all important contact names and phone numbers for the area’s critical services, such as counselling, housing, disabilities, schools, hospitals, Victim Services and a myriad other services.
During her welcoming speech, Mrs Perry reminded all present that the Legion is a wonderful venue to gather with friends, and that you don’t have to be a member to visit the Lounge. After the event, I was reminded that the City of Leduc also offers a collection of community links in its “Community Directory”, on the main page of its website, www.leduc.ca.
Among the guests, a family was delighting in the new acquaintances they made, and the quality door prizes they were carrying out: Diane, whose husband is a Suncor pilot, was there with her family, and shared that the feel of this event reminded her of the warmth of the small Ontario town they recently moved from.
City of Leduc FCSS Director Donna Brock and Alderman David Mackenzie were both there, representing their city while cheerfully meeting new residents.
Leduc County Mayor John Whaley showed up after attending another function, and enjoyed meeting a few new residents: he made a point of visiting with each business operator. He shared with enthusiasm that this regional Hub provides a valuable service to the community, and that he expects HUB to grow positively, especially now that it has found a new home in its high-profile location at the Royal Canadian Legion.
Valerie Kobeluk, a Thorsby-area resident who is completing massive renovations to an imposing old house on Telford Lake, was happy to attend this gathering, and to meet a few people, including business operators: she also commented on the “small town feel” of this event, adding that she looks forward to being a full-time Leduc citizen.
HUB is a “connecting agency”, shared Susan Perry, and “we are thrilled to continue its 10-month success story of serving the regional community, now from a central office, easy to find and with ample parking and a fine dining lounge next door. Aside from the recent Newcomers’ Social, HUB is coordinating a COATS FOR FAMILIES collection event, where coats will be gratefully accepted, cleaned and distributed in partnership with United Way. It means that not all coats are distributed in the community where they were collected!”
An amazing statistic was brought forward: since 2006, Leduc has grown by 50%. That is amazing, and we have to commend Hub for creating such a valuable service for this dynamic region. As HUB volunteers have expressed the other night, we at the Pipestone Flyer want to offer our best wishes, and say: “Welcome, neighbors!”
