Thorsby Sabers Place Fourth at Provincials

The Thorsby Sabres Girls Volleyball team won the Central Zone Championship and advanced to the 1A Alberta Schools Athletic Association’s Provincial Volleyball Championships held in Vermilion by the St. Jerome’s High School. The tournament began on Thursday Nov 22nd and ended on Saturday Nov 24th.
In all ten schools from around the province were represented at this year’s tournament. Thorsby was placed in a pool with schools from Acme, Smoky Lake, Falher, and Foremost. The top three teams advanced to the playoff round.
Thorsby defeated Smoky Lake and Acme two games to none and lost a close match to Falher. The Sabres won the first game 25 to 23 then lost the second game 24 to 26. In the final game Falher was able to win the game and the match 7 to 15.
Their final round-robin game was against the Foremost Forettes, which they defeated in two hard fought games 25 to 23 and 30 to 28. This victory gave the Sabres a first place finish in their pool and a buy into the semifinals on Saturday.
The semifinal saw Thorsby face Falher for the second time. Falher had edged the Sabres in the round robin in three closely contested games. The semifinal was a continuation of their first encounter. These two evenly matched teams took both games to extra points before the Falher Lynx emerged victorious winning both games 24 to 26 and 25 to 27. Falher went on to win the Provincial Championship against Smoky Lake.
The Sabres played the Gators from Senator Gershaw in the Bronze medal game. The girls had given everything they had in the semifinal and though they played well they were defeated in two straight games and placed a very respectful fourth in the province.
Playing for Thorsby were; sisters Kelsey, Tracy, and Trina Ewashkiw, along with Laura Jamha, Amanda Morgan, Jennifer Peterson, Kaylin Powlik, and Amanda Wemp.
