Millet Has The Biggest Losers And Winners

During the Months of November and December, local Millet mom and fitness trainer Ashley Volkerink saw her dream become reality; a healthier Millet for the new year.

Wanting to do something good for the community that she lives in, Ashley put her abilities and training to use as a Certified Fitness Instructor and Nutrition and Wellness Specialist, to run a challenge she called Millet's Biggest Loser. Participants would sign up and be put through a training regimen that would assist them in losing weight, and for every pound lost they would agree to donate a matching amount of food to the Millet Food Bank. Ashley would also be donating a portion of the program fees to the food bank as well.

Nineteen brave souls signed on to take part in the challenge and sixteen continued all the way through to the end. For all their hard work a grand total of 59.6 lbs were lost and $215.00 plus 61 lbs of food were donated to the Millet Food Bank! Pretty darn impressive for a little town and a mom with an idea! It just goes to show what kind of a difference a big heart and some determination can make in helping to improve an entire community.

Due to the success of the challenge and the positive feedback from the participants, Ashley has decided to continue on with a bootcamp and fitness classes beginning in January, being held at the Community Hall.

Being a young mom herself, Ashley also understands how difficult it can be to find ways to keep healthy, social and active with little ones around requiring a lot of attention, so child care will be available at an affordable $3.00/class. Plus, come spring, she is looking to start a Stroller-Fit group, and a Fit-2-Run 5k group as well. Interested parties can reach Ashley at 780-691-2912 or fit4ufitness@hotmail.ca.
