Dear Santa Claus. Can we please have 1st place back? The Wetaskiwin Iceman didn’t waste any time burning off the turkey and celebratory cheer. Keeping up to the standard of play that the team left off on before the Christmas break was very important. The tight race for 1st in the CJHL East Division against rival Sherwood Park Knights is not going to get any easier. Freshly back from the Christmas break and facing the Leduc Riggers on Friday Jan. 4th, the Iceman took their A game on the road and were rewarded with a 7-3 win and were vaulted back into 1st place in the East.
Welcome to the wild wild East. Wham, bang, boom. This 7-3 Iceman win lacked any of the Christmas goodwill of a week earlier. The two teams literally punched it out in a fight filled game. With Chris Sharkey in net the Iceman spread out the goal scoring with Jordan Howe, Dylan Weaver, Ryley Bennefield, Keaton White, DJ Bennefield, Dawson Kress and Suede Omeasoo all scoring in a game that saw 124 minutes in penalties.
Sunday’s Jan. 6th away game against the Strathcona Bruins produced a 5-3 win for the Iceman. The Iceman have been very consistent playing a solid game the last couple of months. In order to stay in 1st they have to maintain their present pace and play the goal scoring game that they can.
Next weekend the Iceman play back to back home games at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre. Friday Jan. 11th has the Edmonton Royals coming down for a 7:30 pm game followed by a Sunday Jan. 13th tilt at 2 pm against the Beaumont Chiefs. The January 13th game features a “Teddy Bear Toss” for Victim Services.
