Movin’ on up in Millet

At the last Millet Council meeting two gentlemen took the floor to present an idea to Council and gather their opinions.
Developer Mr. Al Greenslade and Architect Chris Laing from PGA Architects in Wetaskiwin informed Council that they were representing the owner of the old Catholic Church property in Millet and had come before them to gauge their reaction to a unique proposal for Millet. Pending approval from Council and interest from the public, the owner of the property was interested in building a 12 unit apartment style condo building on the site.
When Council inquired as to what would happen with the old church building they were told that the likeliest outcome would be that the building would be torn down as the cost of moving it is extremely prohibitive. They are currently open to offers on the building from anyone who would like to move it but they are not hopeful to see a sale.
Mr. Greenslade and Mr. Laing also commented that the next step, should Council approve, is to host an open house so the public can see the plans, ask any questions they may have, and express their opinions on the project.
At the end of the presentation Council agreed that they were certainly interested in learning more and were in favour of the project moving on to the next phase of an open house.
In later talks with Mr. Greenslade he shared a little more detail on the project.
The owner actually has plans to erect two Tudor style 12 unit buildings on the property (as the concept drawing shows) but the condos on the western side of the property would be built first and the rate of sale of those units would determine when and if the second building would begin construction.
Currently, in the prospective phase, it is still unsure whether the units would begin as rentals or be immediately sold as condos.
The target demographics for the buildings would be for a 55+ residence. When asked where they are looking to draw their buyers from Mr. Greenslade said that an ideal mix would be some local residents choosing to downsize into the condos, and the rest bringing new people into town. However, he shared that he has had such positive responses from people in Millet whom he has shared this idea with, it has the potential to completely fill with local residents, which would be fine as well.
Currently there are no projected costs on the units and Misters Laing and Greenslade are still working on a presentation to bring to a public meeting.
One thing Mr. Greenslade did point out was that he has close ties to the Millet area as he grew up there and his parents are still in the community, so it matters to him that during construction they would use local contractors and subcontractors as well as purchasing their product locally.
So even though there is no timeline to the start of the project as there is still rezoning to be done and infrastructure to be put in place, they hope to move forward as quickly as possible and break ground this year.
For those who are interested in finding out more about this project please keep an eye on Millet's Council notes as the date of the open house will be announced there.
