Cardboard Races Return For Second Year
After a successful first year, the Gwynne Valley Ski Area is holding their second annual cardboard sled races Family Day Long Weekend at the ski hill east of the city.
Last year, more than 45 sleds and 75 people took part in the first cardboard sled races held at the ski hill. This year's races will be held Feb. 17 at the Gwynne Valley Ski Area.
The ski hill's Shirley Rusin explained that anyone interested in taking part in the races should be at the hill before 12 p.m. To register their team and sled. Racing is scheduled to start at noon.
"The main rules still stand. Sleds can be made with cardboard and duct tape only. No plastic parts," Rusin said in an interview with the Pipestone Flyer. "There's still a few people who don't follow the rules."
Awards will be handed out for team award, fastest sled, best design, and creativity.
Anyone taking part in the races will be given a free lift pass, for an afternoon of skiing and snowboarding at the hill.
Busy season so far
This year's season so far at the Gwynne Valley Ski Hill has been much busier than last year due to the increase in snow accumulation on the hill.
The Gwynne Ski Hill relies entirely on natural snow to cover the ski hill. With such little snow in the region last year from November to January, the ski area's season opening was delayed until their was enough snow.
"Things are going really well," Rusin said. "We've been extremely busy with lessons. You now have to book at least a week in advance (for ski or snowboard lessons)," she added.
Because of the increase in snow and above average temperatures the ski hill was able to open earlier this season, Rusin said.
The New Year's Eve event was also very busy with more than 450 people on the hill that day.
