Planning for a Fit Future
On January 16th, The City of Leduc hosted a round table discussion with residents on what the future of fitness could look like in the city. This was the introductory session to the Active Community Strategy which promotes health, wellness, and fitness. Leduc was one of only ten communities in Alberta that were selected by the Alberta Parks and Recreation Association to hold one of these events.
The evening was held at the Denham Inn, with organizers surprised at the response and having to change meeting rooms as a lot more people than anticipated showed up to take part, with a final tally of fifty eight participants.
Five tables were set up with a series of focused questions at each, and participants rotated through each table over the course of the evening. There was a facilitator at each table to encourage discussion and take notes on the comments and suggestions that arose. Table number one's questions centred around places to go and things to do, table two was people to see and investment to support, table three was re-energizing recreation, table four was messages to share, and table five was learnings to apply and ideas to discover.
Many ideas were brought forward over the course of the evening and Community Development Coordinator for Recreation, Rachel Yeung, commented that it was going to take a while to put together all the information gathered from that night. "Everyone was great with all the thoughts and ideas they shared that evening. All the feedback we've received since that night has been very positive as well."
She also pointed out that this will be an ongoing project for the city. Leduc received a $10,000.00 grant for seed money to implement a plan or initiative for the City to become a more active community, and this round table discussion was just the first element in this plan.
