Leduc “SNO-PITCH”
On Saturday Feb 16th one could wonder if they had taken a wrong turn as they drove by the Fred Johns Park. One might think they had turned into Florida or Arizona as they watched a number of teams with bats, balls, and gloves heading for the ball diamonds. Spring training in the snow?
No it was Leduc’s Second Annual Sno-Pitch tournament that featured fourteen teams from as far away as Lloydminster, Grand Cache. Red Deer, and places in between competing in the two-day event. The first day of the tournament featured a round robin series of games that allows the tournament to seed the teams and then on Sunday an Oregon draw is used to determine the championship and consolation winners.
Sno-Pitch has some modifications to the game played in the summer. First each batter goes to the plate with a two-ball one-strike count on them. This allows for a faster pace game, which can be very important if the weather is a bit chilly! The second major change is base running which is opposite from the summer game one heads for third instead of first. If you forget you have to retouch home plate before heading in the correct direction. These changes make for a faster pace game and a lot of laughs!
Dozens of games were played with a big emphasis more on having fun than in obtaining a victory. One can hear laughter from all the snowfields ah “diamonds” regardless of the score.
Slo-Pitch National (SPN) sponsors the tournament with proceeds for this year’s tournament being donated to Riseup House in Leduc. Riseup House provides group support, counseling, and resources for women impacted by domestic abuse and educates individuals and groups about preventing and how to respond to abuse.
