Warburg’s Rockin’ Good Time at H.S. Zones
Rockin' away! 13 teams met in Warburg for the 2013 High School Curling Zones.
Back in September, 2012, the athletic directors of high schools in the Alberta north central zone met to discuss issues and bid on hosting zone events and provincial tournaments. Warburg School, under the leadership of Athletic Director Michael Rosentreter, was awarded the bid for curling.
On February 22 and 23, 2013, thirteen teams consisting of five boys, three girls, and five mixed met at the Warburg curling arena to determine who would advance to Provincials.
This years participating teams came from Edwin Parr (Athabasca), Barrhead, Boyle, John Maland (Devon), Mayerthorpe, Onoway, Living Waters (Spruce Grove), Warburg School, R. F. Staples (Westlock), Hilltop High (Whitecourt)
Brittany Geinger, with the mixed team from Mayerthorpe, found the Zones competition “very intriguing” because this was her first bonspiel. “It’s important that people have a good attitude and have a good time (when they come). I think we will do good overall.”
According to Rosentreter, there has been a continued strong curling turnout. “We have strong mixed and boys’ teams, some of the best we’ve seen in years,” he said. “The girls’ draw is improving every year.”
Here are the results of winners advancing to the Provincials:
Girls—Hilltop High beat out R. F. Staples;
Mixed—R. F. Staples beat out John Maland. This particular R. F. Staples team has won three years in a row,” noted Rosentreter.
Boys—Onoway beat out Boyle. Onoway has won Zones two years in a row.
Rosentreter extends a special thank you to Kevin Maine and Les Nemeth and the rest of the Warburg Curling Club for hosting the event.
