March has arrived and signs of spring are upon us. Snow is melting, nights are shorter and days are longer and warmer. This wrap-up of winter in bringing in the wrap-up of basketball season as well. Also, pink shirt day has passed but did it really help stop the bullying?
It has been a very interesting basketball season. There were wins and losses, and at this point it is hard to tell if the Griffins are going to place in the top three. Last week the games saw a close finish. Senior boys won their game with quite a lead but the girls weren’t so lucky. They lost, but they will hopefully take that win back during the playoffs. With all their hard work and practice the two teams deserve to win but if they don’t, at least we can congratulate them for trying their best.
Pink Shirt Day was on February 27, 2013. For people who don’t know what that is, it is an effort to help stop bullying. Boys and girls clubs, schools, businesses, organizations and individuals across Canada were participating in Pink Shirt Day. This push all started when a new kid wore a pink shirt to school.
Two guys and their teenage friends organized a high-school protest to wear pink in sympathy with a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied [for wearing a pink shirt]…They took a stand against bullying when they protested against the harassment of a new student by distributing pink T-shirts to all the boys in their school.
Two people can come up with an idea, run with it, and it can do wonders. Finally, someone stood up for a weaker kid. So one of the teachers saw this happening so this teacher went out and bought 50 T-shirts for all the boys. The bully saw the pink shirts being handed out and was never seen again.
Pink Shirt Day may have stopped the bullying the one kid was going through, but I feel like there is so much bullying in this world that if it was gone completely, every day would be a celebration. It is great that we can stop some bullying but for others the only way to stop it is to stand up for yourself, and walk away.
Bullying hurts feelings and can get or turn to violence. Tell someone if you are bullied and don’t fight back don’t let the bullies win. All they want is a good fight, don’t give them that and they will give up on you and move on.
