Beaumont Bandits Advance
The high school basketball season is rapidly coming to a close with the competition of the Edmonton Metro playoffs that concluded last week. The Beaumont Bandits surprised a few teams as they advanced to the City II Divisions finals. They gained the spot by defeating Archbishop Oscar Romeo in a closely contested game 58 to 56, then defeated Fort Saskatchewan 57 to 49 in the semifinals. In the Finals the Bandits faced the JH Picard Pumas. The Pumas were able to win the Division II title by downing Beaumont 65 to 43.
In other action the Christ the King (CTK) and Leduc boys were both derailed on their journey towards a city championship as Fort Saskatchewan defeated CTK 62 to 56 and Archbishop O’Leary defeated the Tigers 95 to 50. In girls action Beaumont and the Leduc girls lost their first round games while the CTK girls won their quarterfinal game against Fort Saskatchewan 46 to 39 then lost the semifinal to Bellerose 66 to 61.
CTK and Leduc Comp teams entered the Edmonton’s Zone Championships this week. The top teams will advance to the Provincials that will be held next weekend in various locations throughout the province.
In 2A action the CTK girls will host John Paul II from Fort Saskatchewan. The winning team will advance to the semifinals against the #1 rank Strathcona Christian Academy team from Sherwood Park. Meanwhile the CTK boys will travel to John Paul II. The winner will also advance to face the #1 rank Strathcona Christian Academy boys.
In 3A action The Leduc Tigers hosted Eastglen on Monday, March 4th. The Edmonton Zone will have two teams advance to the provincials. This has resulted in a double elimination tournament with a number of games being played throughout this week with the finals being played on Saturday, March 9th.
In girls action the Leduc Comp ladies will face the #1 Ranked St Albert girl’s team and will have their work cut out for them to qualify for the Provincials. Neither of Beaumont’s teams qualified for the playoffs and their season came to an end when the boys played JH Picard in the Division II championship game.
