A Tropical Getaway

Haley Crandall Age 10 Star Skater performed a flawless routine.

The Wetaskiwin Figure Skating Club had a party this past weekend. The theme of the party was a “A Tropical Getaway” and was presented by all of the talented young skaters of the WFSC. The Civic Centre was all decked out and had all the appropriate props in place to take the crowd that gathered off on a tropical musical dance on ice.
On your way into the rink to watch the WFSC’s Annual Carnival you could have bid on some items in a Silent Auction or bought tickets for raffles or perhaps the 50/50 draw. Or you could have simply just taken in the friendly celebratory atmosphere of the skaters, families, friends and fans that make Figure Skating the spectacle that it is.
The Sunday afternoon event started off with our National Anthem performed by young Emily Yanosik. The Flag Carriers were Natasha Gordon and Emily Johnston. WFSC Banner Carriers were Haley Crandall and Jaelyn Hodnefield. Alderwoman Patricia MacQuarrie and Councillor Brenda Shantz welcomed everybody on behalf of the City and County.
Once the formal part was done the fun began. There were numerous skaters and acts combined to make this dance Carnival on ice. Songs included in the program were Pirates of the Carribean, Hawaiin Roller Coaster Ride, Sweet Jamaica, Beach Boys, Sea Cruise, and Hula Hop to name a few. The Senior Star Skate girls even came out with beach towels, sunglasses and drinks to start their act off. The show was split into two parts with an intermission in between. “A Tropical Getaway” was smoothly performed with no down time between ice dancer acts. The older girls in the advanced programs helped out the younger less experienced skaters with their performances. Everybody involved here should be given a round of applause for a fine show. Congrats to the figure skaters, coaches, parents, administrators and volunteers. The general consensus from all observers was that “ there should be more Carnivals on Ice”. “These girls and boys spend a lot of time practicing and it would be nice for them to have another avenue or two to show off to the public”. Good job Wetaskiwin Figure Skating Club.
