Leduc Tigers Off To A Great Start In Volleyball
The 2013 high school volleyball season started on Tuesday, Sept 24th for both Leduc Comp and Christ the King (CTK) high schools. This year Leduc Comp will be competing in Division 2. The Division is composed of 18 schools and has been broken down into two Pools. The Tigers Girls team will be playing in Pool A along with Beaumont, Austin O’Brien, Archbishop Jordan, Lillian Osborne, Louis St. Laurent, McNally, Strathcona Christian (SCA), and W.P. Wagner. The Boys section, of Pool A, has Austin O’Brien, Archbishop Jordan, Lillian Osborne, Salisbury, J. Percy Page Strathcona Christian, Holy Trinity and W.P. Wagner.
Meanwhile the CTK girls will play in Division 3 along with eleven other schools including Amiskwacy (AMISK), Eastglen, Fort Saskatchewan, John Paul II, J. Percy Page, Maurice Lavallee, Millwoods Christian, Old Scona, Parkland Immanuel, Queen Elizabeth, and Oscar Romero. The boys will also be in Division 3 along with Fort Saskatchewan, John Paul II, Eastglen, J.H. Picard, Maurice Lavallee, Old Scona, Parkland Immanuel, Queen Elizabeth, Beaumont, Alberta School of the Deaf (ASD), and Oscar Romero.
The Leduc Comp boys’ team started the season with an exhibition game against Saint Francis Xavier (SFX). Both teams started slowly showing a lot of rust and traded points throughout the set. The Tigers began to control things as the game progressed and won 25 to 21.
Just when it looked like the Comp was beginning to look like they had ironed out their play, they quickly fell behind 10 to 4 right at the start of the second set. The SFX Rams held a lead until the Tigers roared back to tie it at 18 and then pushed their advantage to 21 to 18 before the Rams found their footing and took a brief 23 to 22 lead before the Tigers closed it out winning 25 to 23.
In the third set the Tigers clawed and scratched their way to a 25 to 18 victory and won the match 3 sets to none.
Meanwhile the Leduc Comp Lady Tigers won their exhibition match against the St Joseph Saints 3 to 0. The league season began on Tuesday, Oct 1st.
The CTK Chargers began their season when they hosted the Archbishop Oscar Romero Ravens. The CTK girls were able to charge to a 3 to 1 victory. Unfortunately the CTK boys were not as fortunate losing to Ravens 3 sets to 0. On Thursday, Sept 26th the CTK teams traveled to Fort Saskatchewan to play John Paul II. The girls continued their winning ways defeating John Paul II 3 sets to 0. The CTK Charger Boys Team are still developing, after a two year absent from the volleyball scene, and lost their match 3 sets to 0.
