HIGH RIVER, AB - A Wildrose government would repeal Bills 19, 36 and 50, entrench property rights into the Alberta Bill of Rights, and spearhead a national initiative to have property rights enshrined into the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith, former campaign director of the Alberta Property Rights Initiative and managing director of the Canadian Property Rights Research Institute, said restoring and strengthening property rights would be a top priority for her government after the constant attacks the PC government has waged against Alberta landowners over the last two years.
"Protecting private property is one of the fundamental duties of government in any free and democratic society. Unfortunately for Alberta landowners, the PC government has completely failed them," Smith said. “We will reverse every property rights violation this government has committed and we will strengthen property rights legislation to the fullest extent possible."
Smith also said Bill 1 of a Wildrose government would be the Alberta Property Rights Preservation Act, a landmark law that will recognize the protection of private property rights for the first time in our province’s history.
“This government has taken away so much of what landowners rely on to protect their investments and their livelihoods,” Smith said. “It’s time we start giving it back.”
Wildrose Sustainable Resource Development Critic Paul Hinman criticized the PC government’s centralization of land-use decision-making at the cabinet table.
“One of the reasons why we are seeing such brazen land grabs is because under these laws, cabinet has the final say on whether or not certain public projects are needed,” Hinman said. “We will make sure things like transmission lines are subjected to a full, open and independent needs assessment, so projects will be approved based on merit and not politics, and property owners well be protected through the due process of law.”
