“When Life Gives You Lemons......
Make Lemonade” says owner of local pub.
After receiving considerable criticism for launching out with this new idea that he cites as “progress for Main Street”, Brady Weiler, owner and operator of the Iron Boar and Pub, decided that, “When Life Gives You Lemons...... Make Lemonade.” So, he announced on facebook, “Join us Tomorrow Thursday, July 28th for COMPLIMENTARY LEMONADE on the PATIO at the Iron Boar Pub from 4:30 pm -5:30 pm.”
Free lemonade and tasty appetizers. Both were available at the Iron Boar Pub & Patio on Main Street in Wetaskiwin on Thursday, July 28th. Brady Weiler, whether it was by luck or good planning, chose a warm, sunny Alberta day to host this special event.
As it turned out, the biggest problem was there were too few tables on the outdoor patio to accommodate all that wanted to enjoy the pleasant summer evening so it became an unplanned game of musical chairs. As patrons arrived, they anxiously waited inside the pub until guests left the patio and then moved outdoors so they could enjoy their beverages and appetizers seated among the planters of flowers and surrounding wood barriers.
Brady states his case on facebook, “If you think that sitting outdoors at your favourite pub/restaurant is a great thing and that it should be available to all establishments on a case by case basis that meet municipal and provincial requirements, join this group and represent the public at large.” Brady feels it would be a tragedy and a real step backwards if a few folks that don't like the idea were able to put an end to what he calls progress. He concludes by using the example, “Imagine what Edmonton's Whyte Avenue would be if it did not have any patios?”
But it isn’t all criticism that Brady is receiving. Some comments posted on facebook include:

“Camrose has many patios, one right on main street and we have not had any problems.”
“I am dumbfounded by the hassles you are encountering in your attempt to bring this town some culture, beauty, and a place to enjoy a safe and wonderful evening.”
“Where I am from, every restaurant and pub has a patio.”
Whether you are in agreement with the outdoor patio or against it, it is a new and different idea for Main Street Wetaskiwin. Will it work? Will other establishments follow this example? Can ideas like this make Main Street an attractive and interesting location that will retain locals in our community and attract tourists? The answers to these questions will be resolved in time, but in the meantime you may also want to take a stroll down Whyte Avenue in Edmonton and observe how ‘they are doing it’ and how that model might fit Main Street, Wetaskiwin.
In the meantime, it appears that the slogan for the Iron Boar and Pub will continue to be “When Life Gives You Lemons...... Make Lemonade.”
